Run from the Sun

Guest blog post by Marilynn Eiken, melanoma advocate and host of annual Run from the Sun 5k/Youth 1mile Run:

“Run from the Sun started in 2015 after my husband Tye lost his battle with metastatic melanoma. Our community was shocked by his death, and it became very evident how many people were unaware that “just skin cancer” can be deadly. Our event started as a 5k/10k for participants but has grown to include volunteer medical providers to give free skin checks to anyone that attends regardless of participation.

Providing information and education regarding skin cancer and sun safety has always been a core objective. Local high school seniors are eligible for a scholarship by writing an essay on these topics.

Since 2015, this labor of love has evolved into an annual family event bringing people together from surrounding states to spread awareness, support melanoma research and to have a little fun! In 2022, our 10k winner was in active treatment for Stage 3 melanoma and was an absolute inspiration to everyone!  Our goal is to spread awareness and provide up to date information about melanoma, give hope to anyone battling this disease and to honor those that have been lost to it.” – Marilynn Eiken
