MRF Partners with USA Field Hockey and glōProfessional in Sun Safe Play! Campaign

USA Field Hockey launches Sun Safe Play! Campaign

glōProfessional and the Melanoma Research Foundation will partner in educational skin cancer initiative

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo – GlōProfessional, a USA Field Hockey premier partner and the Melanoma Research Foundation announced today a partnership with USA Field Hockey’s Sun Safe Play! initiative. Sun Safe Play! is a national awareness campaign aimed at educating athletes on the dangers of extensive sun exposure and the importance of practicing sun safe habits. The campaign was established in 2006 in honor of the late Maria Whitehead, former USA Field Hockey Junior National Team member, who lost her battle with melanoma at the age of 25.

“We are excited to have the support of glōProfessional and the Melanoma Research Foundation for the re-launch of our Sun Safe Play! awareness campaign,” said Steve Locke, Executive Director, USA Field Hockey. “With skin cancer being the most common form of cancer in the United States, especially among adults, it is so important for athletes playing in the sun regularly to be educated on UV radiation and how to protect themselves. glōProfessional, the Melanoma Research Foundation and USA Field Hockey are all committed to educating athletes on the best ways to prevent skin cancer.”

Melanoma, the fastest growing cancer in the U.S., claims the life of one person every hour and is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-to 29-years-old and the second most common cancer in adolescents and young adults 15-to 29-years-old.

Athletes who practice and compete outdoors are regularly exposed to the sun and are at a higher risk for developing skin cancer. The Sun Safe Play! campaign encourages teenagers and young adults to practice sun safe habits and conduct regular self-skin examinations for the early detection of skin cancer and melanoma.

“The positive health benefits of athletics and team sports can’t be questioned, especially for today’s youth," said Tim Turnham, Executive Director of the Melanoma Research Foundation. "Just as athletes protect their bodies with protective gear like helmets, knee pads or mouth guards, Sun Safe Play! will help young athletes know how to protect their largest organ – their skin – from damage that can stay with them for a lifetime or, in some cases, cut their life tragically short. The importance of this program can’t be underestimated.”

In May 2012, USA Field Hockey announced glōProfessional as a premier partner and the official uniform sponsor of the U.S. Women’s National Team. glōProfessional will provide skin examinations and free sunscreen at all USA Field Hockey sanctioned events.

“GloProfessional is proud to partner with USA Field Hockey for the Sun Safe Play! program to raise awareness and prevention of melanoma and skin cancer and stress the importance of using sun protection properly every day,” said Lisa Bookman, Director of Marketing for glōProfessional
