In Amy’s Words: Despicable Melanoma – My Minions at Universal Studios

Six years ago I noticed a dark line in my finger nail that continued to worsen over the course of the year. After my nail started lifting from the nail bed, I went to see my dermatologist where I was told I had nothing to worry about. I decided to seek out a second opinion where the reaction was, "I am sure it's fine, but we can do a biopsy if you'd like." I was diagnosed with acral melanoma two weeks later on April 18, 2011. I was only 25. To say it turned my world upside down is an understatement. After four surgeries in two months, I was melanoma-free. Early detection saved my life – I was one of the lucky ones. I knew then how important it was to share my story and raise awareness. I am hopeful because I know that the majority of melanomas are considered to be preventable.

When I learned about the Melanoma Research Foundation’s Miles for Melanoma program, I knew I had to get involved. It just so happened that the first annual event in Los Angeles was the year following my diagnosis. I have not missed one yet and look forward to attending this year for the 5th consecutive year! My favorite part of the Universal Studios event is rallying together with my family and friends for a very serious reason, but in a really fun environment! I always feel hopeful when surrounded by a large group of people, coming together for the same cause – there is power in numbers!! I hope you join me at this year's Miles for Melanoma 5k at Universal!
