Why I’m Getting Naked for Skin Health

Guest blog post by Ian Michael Crumm, Celebrity Esthetician, Podcast Host, Key Opinion Leader, Melanoma Advocate and 2025 #GetNaked Spokesperson:

Some moments stick with you for life.

For me, it was a summer day spent swimming at my grandmother’s house. After asking her about a scar on her leg, I first learned about melanoma, and my entire outlook on sun safety changed forever.

My grandmother, whom I lovingly nicknamed ‘Glamie’, is a melanoma survivor and continues to be one of my biggest inspirations today. She taught me at a young age that skin isn’t just about appearances — it’s about health itself. That early conversation by the pool planted the seed that would later grow into my career and lifelong passion for protecting the skin we’re in forever.

As an esthetician, I’ve built my career around celebrating glowing, beautiful skin. But more importantly, I’ve made it my mission to celebrate healthy skin, and healthy skin starts with self-awareness, daily sun safety practices and regular skin exams. It’s not just about what you put on your skin, but how you protect it daily.

I’m deeply honored to partner with the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) as the 2025 #GetNaked Spokesperson. This campaign is more than just a catchy phrase — it’s a life-saving reminder. By getting naked and checking your skin from head to toe, you give yourself the best chance to spot suspicious changes early and take action when it matters most.

Through my platforms, I aim to empower as many people as possible to make sun protection and skin health a daily, non-negotiable ritual. A tan will fade. A sunburn will peel. But the damage left behind can last a lifetime — and sometimes, it can cost a life.

Sun protection isn’t seasonal, it’s a 365-day-a-year commitment.

And skin exams aren’t just a good idea, they are essential self-care. Here are 5 skin health tips I live by:

1. Make SPF a Daily Ritual
Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every morning,  even when it’s cloudy or cold outside. And don’t forget commonly missed areas like your ears, back of the neck, hands, and tops of your feet!

2. Reapply, Reapply, Reapply
SPF isn’t a one-and-done deal. Reapply every two hours when you’re outdoors, and even more often if you’re swimming or sweating.

3. Embrace UPF Clothing and Accessories
Clothing with a UPF rating, wide-brimmed hats and UV-protective sunglasses are powerful tools. Think of them as an extension of your skincare routine.

4. Seek Shade, Especially During Peak Hours
The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 4 pm Whenever possible, stay in the shade, use umbrellas or plan activities outside of peak sun times.

5. #GetNaked for Regular Skin Exams
Check your skin head-to-toe once a month and schedule annual professional skin exams with a dermatologist. Early detection saves lives, plain and simple.

Partnering with the MRF feels like a full-circle moment — honoring my Glamie while inspiring others to protect themselves and their loved ones.

This mission is personal. This mission is powerful. And this mission is just getting started.

So here’s my call to you:
Protect your skin. Check your skin. Celebrate your skin. And most importantly — #GetNaked. Your future self will thank you.

For Glamie. For me. For you.
