We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Summer Intern to support our Science and Research Grant Management team. This entry-level position is ideal for a student or recent graduate interested in nonprofit operations, public administration, finance, or project management. The intern will assist with grant documentation, data tracking, reporting, and administrative support.
Education and Experience:
- Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Social Work, Public Health, Science or a similar field.
- Experience working with the cancer community or a similar chronic illness patient population is a plus.
Overview:
The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is a nonprofit organization that supports the over 1.3 million Americans impacted by melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Its mission is to eradicate melanoma by accelerating medical RESEARCH while EDUCATING and ADVOCATING for the melanoma community.
The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is seeking a Scientific Grants Intern to support the organization’s research grant programs and scientific initiatives. This internship will focus primarily on the administrative and operational aspects of grant management, providing essential support to the Chief Scientific Officer.
Job Title: Summer Intern – Grant Coordinator and Administration
Location: In Person, Washington, DC Office
Duration: June 2025 – August 2025, Part time or Full-time (negotiable)
Core Responsibilities:
- Track and Maintain Grant Applications
Monitor incoming grant submissions, maintain application logs, and ensure completeness of materials prior to review. - Support the Peer Review Process
Assist with the coordination of scientific peer review panels by preparing reviewer materials, tracking deadlines, and compiling reviewer feedback. - Organize Grant Documentation
Maintain accurate and organized digital files related to active, past, and pending grants, including contracts, reports, and correspondence. - Assist with ROI and Outcomes Reporting
Compile data from past grantees to help assess the return on investment (ROI) and impact of MRF-funded research. - Prepare Communications to Grantees and Reviewers
Draft, proofread, and send emails or letters related to application status, reporting requirements, and upcoming deadlines. - Support Scientific Meeting Planning
Assist in planning logistics for grant-related meetings, such as Scientific Advisory Board calls, working groups, or virtual panels. - Conduct Background Research
Research other foundations’ grant models, clinical trial programs, and advocate engagement strategies to inform MRF’s programs. - Assist in Report Development
Help prepare internal and external reports and presentations summarizing grant program activity, trends, and impact.
- Database Entry and Management
Input and update data related to grant cycles, reviewer assignments, and application scoring (training provided).
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college/university program in business, public administration, nonprofit management, science (pre-med) or a related field.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills is a must.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest in grants, science/cancer research/medicine, or nonprofit work is preferred.
