Causes of Melanoma

Causes of Melanoma

What causes melanoma?

The greatest contributor (approximately 65 percent) to melanoma is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from natural or artificial sources, such as sunlight and indoor tanning beds. It is likely that a combination of family history, genetics and environmental factors are to blame. However, since melanoma can occur in all melanocytes throughout the body, even those that are never exposed to the sun, UV light cannot be solely responsible for a diagnosis.

Environmental and Genetic Factors for Melanoma

A combination of environmental and genetic factors as potential causes of melanoma portends genetic testing for the disease, that which may be useful in the identification, screening and prevention of melanoma in high-risk individuals. Genetic testing for hereditary melanoma should take place within research protocols. This will improve data collection and future health outcomes. It is recommended that all eligible patients should have pre- and post-test counseling due to the risks and benefits associated with genetic testing.
